UNESCO City of Music Bogotá seeking young violinists for international competition

Young South Australian violinists are being encouraged to take advantage of an outstanding international opportunity, with applications now open for the second International Violin Competition City of Bogotá.

Presented by the City of Bogotá through the Secretariat of Culture, Recreation and Sport, the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra and Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo, the competition has quickly established itself as one of Latin America’s leading platforms for emerging classical musicians.

Open to violinists of any nationality aged between 18 and 29, the competition offers participants the chance to perform before an internationally renowned jury, connect with fellow musicians from around the world and develop valuable international networks. Finalists will receive travel and accommodation to Bogotá to compete in the live rounds from 11–20 June 2027.

The competition reflects Bogotá’s commitment to artistic excellence and international collaboration as a fellow UNESCO Creative City of Music.

Following a successful inaugural edition in 2025, which attracted 122 applications from 30 countries, the 2027 competition will once again bring together some of the world’s most promising young violinists while celebrating Bogotá’s thriving classical music ecosystem.

The competition offers a total prize pool of USD $80,000, including:

  • First Prize – USD $30,000
  • Second Prize – USD $20,000
  • Third Prize – USD $15,000
  • Best Performance of a Colombian Work – USD $15,000

Beyond the competition itself, participants will benefit from masterclasses, mentoring opportunities and connections with leading performers, educators and industry professionals. Prize winners will also receive ongoing support in identifying future performance opportunities to help further develop their international careers.

As one of UNESCO’s Cities of Music, Bogotá is home to a vibrant network of orchestras, conservatories, educators and performance venues, making it an important destination for classical music across Latin America. Initiatives such as the International Violin Competition demonstrate how UNESCO Cities of Music continue to invest in talent development while creating opportunities for cultural exchange and international collaboration.

Adelaide City of Music encourages eligible South Australian violinists to consider applying and to take advantage of the opportunities that exist across the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Applications close 31 October 2026.
