New Technology Building New Relationships

Adelaide’s UNESCO City of Music designation connects our state to a global network of cities, organisations, and individuals that recognise culture as a fundamental pillar of all social, political, and economic life.

Extensive engagement consistently identifies music technology as a key focus, either due to its effects on music culture, both positive and negative, through its potential to create new mediums or tools, or to connect the state’s artists and music technology sector to global markets and discussions.

Being isolated geographically has never stopped Adelaide from building international careers. To enhance local aspirations and connect to global discussions and opportunities, ACOM is building relationships across the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and beyond.

One of these relationships has been with Stockholm’s Music Technology Conference. Through this connection, ACOM was introduced to Ørigin Stories, originally Stockholm and now Amsterdam-based creative production company.

ACOM and Ørigin Stories have been developing a pilot project to explore the impacts of AI on music and using technology to create innovative new channels to connect and showcase SA music to the world.

Partnering with Adelaide University, ACOM organised for a group of Adelaide artists to join an online workshop with Ørigin Stories director, Sean Bradford. Designed to gauge interest, understanding, and opportunities, the workshop covered developments in AI, tools, creative practice, and the ethical questions relating to IP, AI, and machine learning.

A high-level discussion revealed a strong interest and engagement with AI across a broad range of creative, organisational, and technical fronts.

Feedback from this initial pilot event is helping design a program to explore creative potential and to connect and showcase South Australian artists globally. ACOM is in discussions about a new workshop and developing specific showcase opportunities in Europe and across the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

ACOM would like to thank Sean Bradford of Ørigin Stories, Dan Pitman from the Sonic Arts department, Adelaide University, and the artists who participated in the workshop.
