ACOM Stories: Kansas City, UNESCO City of Music

Kansas City stands alongside Adelaide as a UNESCO City of Music, united in a shared commitment to harnessing music as a catalyst for sustainable development, cultural exchange, and community wellbeing. With a rich musical legacy and a forward-looking creative vision, Kansas City continues to champion music as a force that connects communities locally, nationally, and globally. Its dedication to heritage, innovation, and international collaboration makes it a dynamic and meaningful partner for Adelaide’s music ecosystem.

Kansas City, Missouri stands as one of the great music cities of the United States; a place where jazz, swing, gospel and blues have shaped not only local identity but the evolution of modern music itself. Its musical legacy is anchored in the transformational era of Kansas City swing, a style rooted in the blues, powered by a driving 4/4 rhythm and fuelled by a culture of late-night jam sessions and “battles of the bands.” This distinctive sound helped propel the careers of legendary Kansas City natives such as Ben Webster and Charlie Parker, Jr., whose innovations laid the groundwork for bebop and forever shifted the trajectory of American jazz.

That legacy is still deeply felt today. Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District remains a living monument to African American musical heritage, supported by institutions such as the American Jazz Museum, the Gem Theater, the Black Archives of Mid-America and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Visitors can tour the former headquarters of Local 627 – the “colored” musicians’ union of the American Federation of Musicians – at 1823 Highland Avenue, now a National Historic Landmark and widely considered the oldest surviving jazz house in the United States.

Beyond its historic core, Kansas City’s contemporary music scene thrives across diverse venues, education institutions and creative industries. The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance anchors a strong academic foundation, while the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts stands as an architectural and cultural landmark in the city’s Crossroads Arts District. This district is also home to Folk Alliance International, one of the world’s leading folk music advocacy organisations, adding further depth to the city’s musical ecosystem.

Creative revitalisation is woven into Kansas City’s urban story. Architecture, design and engineering firms contribute significantly to its creative economy, while innovations in media arts and smart-city technology continue to shape its future. Its globally celebrated food culture, particularly Kansas City barbecue, adds yet another layer to its cultural vibrancy.

Kansas City’s outward-looking spirit is reflected in its long tradition of international engagement. Through People to People International, Global Ties KC and an active network of 14 sister cities, including several fellow UNESCO Creative Cities, it maintains strong global connections.
