The Festival Statesmen has emerged as one of Adelaide’s most dynamic and accomplished vocal ensembles – an artistic force that not only enriches the city’s cultural life but also strengthens its identity as a UNESCO City of Music. Known for their versatility, precision, and rich contemporary a cappella sound, the ensemble has become a leading ambassador for South Australia’s vocal artistry.
Their international presence was powerfully cemented in 2024 when the chorus travelled to Auckland for the World Choir Games; the largest choral competition on the planet. Representing Australia among hundreds of choirs from around the globe, Festival Statesmen delivered performances that demonstrated both technical mastery and expressive depth. Their achievement was extraordinary: two World Championship Trophies, earned in the Pop Ensemble and Sacred A Cappella categories an accomplishment that placed Adelaide firmly on the global choral map. Their success resonated far beyond competition results, offering international audiences a compelling window into the vibrancy, ambition, and excellence that define Adelaide’s musical community.
In June 2025, Festival Statesmen continued this outward-facing mission when they travelled to South Korea as cultural representatives, performing at three major international choral festivals across Seoul and Changwon. Standing before new audiences and diverse musical traditions, the ensemble acted as artistic diplomats building cultural bridges, nurturing creative exchange, and sharing a uniquely South Australian approach to contemporary choral performance. These engagements deepened the global musical dialogue that Adelaide contributes to as a UNESCO City of Music, demonstrating how choral performance can communicate both identity and connection across borders.
At home, Festival Statesmen continue to be leaders within Australia’s vocal landscape. Their Founder and Artistic Director, Jonathon Bligh was recently appointed President of the Australian National Choral Association – SA where his extensive experience will no doubt further elevate the choral scene across the state.
The Festival Statesmen’s programming spans evocative sacred works, inventive contemporary arrangements, and bold, theatrical performances that push the boundaries of male-voice a cappella. The ensemble’s commitment to excellence is matched by a dedication to community, with ongoing initiatives that foster young vocal talent and strengthen Adelaide’s growing choral ecosystem.
Through their achievements, locally, nationally and internationally, Festival Statesmen exemplify the values at the heart of Adelaide’s UNESCO City of Music designation: creativity, innovation, artistic excellence and global collaboration. With every performance, they amplify Adelaide’s voice, contributing to a richer, more connected musical world and reinforcing South Australia’s place on the global stage.
