ACOM Stories: Breeze & DIFFERENTLY

Some artists build careers. Others begin to question the systems those careers sit within.

For Breeze, that questioning started early.

Growing up in music from the age of 12, her career unfolded within the independent music scene. Breeze wrote, recorded, toured, released music and learned the mechanics of the industry in real time. Her work travelled across Australia, the United States, Europe, Canada and Africa, shaping a global perspective built not only on performance, but on observation.

What became increasingly clear was not a lack of talent, nor even a lack of tools. It was something less visible and more structural.

Access had expanded. Systems had not.

In 2019, supporting international acts such as Nothing But Thieves and Catfish and the Bottlemen offered a clear contrast. In those environments, the machinery around the music was working. Teams were aligned, pathways were defined and momentum was supported. Outside of that structure, many independent artists were still navigating careers without clear frameworks, expected to arrive “ready-made” in an industry that rarely provided a map. The gap, between potential and pathway, became the foundation for something new for Breeze.

DIFFERENTLY was born as a response. Not as a traditional management company, but as a development-first model designed to give independent artists structure, ownership and real options. It is a space where creativity and strategy exist in conversation rather than competition.

Through DIFFERENTLY, Breeze has worked closely with artists across long-term development, while also mentoring dozens more through career strategy sessions. The focus remains consistent. Artists are supported to clarify direction, build sustainable systems and create work that can move with purpose, not just volume. At its core is a simple but powerful idea. Success in music is not just about output. It is about having something capable of carrying that output forward.

That idea now extends beyond individual careers into cities themselves. Music Cities, DIFFERENTLY’s artist residency program, represents the next evolution of that thinking. Developed through Breeze’s move from Adelaide to Nashville, the residency creates a bridge between two distinct music ecosystems. One is globally established, the other deeply rooted in independent culture.

Rather than positioning artists as visitors, the program embeds them directly into the fabric of a city. Across an intensive residency, artists step into new environments through collaboration and immersion. They co-write with local musicians, work in studios, connect with venues, participate in media and engage with the broader creative community. The structure is deliberate.

Development and creation run in parallel, supported by masterclasses, shared stages and community-led spaces. The intention of DIFFERENTLY’s programs is not just exposure, it is integration.

Artists leave not only with new work, but with relationships, perspective and a clearer understanding of how their careers can expand across borders. It is a model that prioritises connection over transaction, and process over performance alone. In doing so, it reflects a broader shift in how music cities can relate to one another. Not as isolated scenes, but as interconnected ecosystems.

Adelaide and Nashville are the starting point. The ambition reaches further.

By building repeatable pathways between cities, Music Cities begins to explore what a more connected global music landscape might look like. It is one where independent artists can move between communities with purpose, supported by shared knowledge and collaborative infrastructure.

For Adelaide, this kind of work speaks directly to the strength of its identity as a UNESCO City of Music. It reinforces the idea that music is not only something performed, but something built through community and relationships, through systems and through the spaces created for artists to grow.

In a rapidly evolving industry, where independence is no longer the exception but an increasing norm, initiatives like DIFFERENTLY and Music Cities build bridges between communities and offer a glimpse of what comes next. Not just new music, but new ways of making it possible.
